    Valentine's
The Roman Empire, during the rule of Emperor Claudius II of Rome, also
known as Claudius the Cruel, was having a difficult time recruiting men to
serve as soldiers in the Roman army.  The emperor believed that it was
because the men did not want to leave their sweethearts.   He therefore
cancelled all engagements and marriages throughout Rome.

A Roman priest by the name of Valentine secretly married couples and he
was eventually caught, arrested, beaten to death and beheaded on
February 14th, around the year 270.  He was later made a saint.  In
honor of St Valentine, Feb 14 became a lovers' day.

In the earlier years, flowers and gifts were sent to lovers on St
Valentine's Day.  However, nowadays, people are sending flowers and
gifts on St Valentine's Day to parents and other people that they love.
